Invest in your professional development

There still continues to be a need for qualified and skilled supply chain and operations professionals. Take advantage of everything APICS has to offer. Build your network through attending certification courses, PDM’s and other APICS events. The time to work on your professional network is before you need to leverage it. Be prepared for any opportunities that might come your way. Likewise, if you have been contemplating CPIM, CSCP, or CLTD certification now is a perfect time to obtain certification or add to an existing certification. Employers still value APICS certification and put a premium on professionals with APICS credentials. Separate yourself from the rest of the crowd.

The PDM line up for the spring will ensure that we continue our record breaking year with topics that include Logistics/Transportation, Data Quality, Analytics, Warehouse Management, and Inventory Management.

Bill Seliger is Director of Supply Chain at RR Donnelly's spin off, LSC Communications.

Bill will cover the larger disruptive forces that impact supply chains, focusing on the logistics space, addressing what those changes mean for logistics managers, and helping to identify some strategies leaders and practitioners should be thinking about now so that they can be prepared to meet these changes.

I am a tireless and creative Supply Chain leader who thrives on new challenges. I enjoy turning difficult business relationships - silos within organizations - into cooperative alliances and improving my organization’s performance based on the use of data analysis and improved team performance. I clearly see the future state, gather partners for the journey and relentlessly drive towards success. I am not looking for incremental improvements but rather creative solutions that leapfrog past the current state. I get great satisfaction in retiring old technology and achieving new levels of integration across enterprise systems. I succeed where others have failed.

I have expertise in developing and implementing supply chain strategies, value chain network design, end-to-end operations planning, production planning optimization, and improving the performance of logistics and distribution networks. 

As a percussionist in a symphonic band I can see what happens when all of the players are working together at the highest level towards a common goal – that's the vision I have for my organization. Having spent over 20 years in Manufacturing, Customer Service, Sales, Pricing and Logistics I found my calling when given the opportunity to apply Supply Chain best practices across multiple business units with partners from IT, Manufacturing, Customer Service, Finance & Logistics. 

Sharing fresh perspectives with others is important to me. I teach Operations and Supply Chain Management and I am frequently asked to present my ideas at conferences as a panelist and presenter.

Many organizations talk Supply Chain but very few actually do it - my view of Supply Chain Management is that it provides the highest leverage for improving an organization, with true measurable action. My mission in life is to see Supply Chain practices have a greater impact on business and the world!

Specialties: Defining Supply Chain strategy. Using good data, good relationships & change management principles to execute supply chain improvements. Implementing new tools to improve supply chains.

For the 22nd year the APICS Great Lakes District is hosting a student case competition. Over 30 schools representing teams from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana are expected to compete. Come out Saturday, February 18th at 8:30 am and see the next generation of supply chain professionals compete. It is always a good time.

Supply Chain Alignment Competition and Team Building Event

Prove You Are The Best!

The Fox River Chapter is participating in the competition below. We believe it is a very good learning tool and ask your companies to review participating as well.

1. Are you and your colleagues at the top of your game in terms of gaining alignment across your supply chain from suppliers to customers?

2. Do you make it a habit to continually seek new ideas that will help you improve your processes and keep you ahead of the competition?

If you answered yes, then the 2017 Supply Chain Management Competition and Team Building Event is an ideal means for you to demonstrate your expertise, pick up great ideas on areas for improvement, and experience the best business simulation in the galaxy.

If you answered no, then now is the time to up your game and create a dialog with your colleagues on the importance of alignment and what you can do to achieve success.

What Is This About?

This supply chain management competition and team building event has teams of four competing against each other using the online business simulation tool called The Fresh Connection.

Each team member is responsible for one functional area such as Sales, Operations, Procurement, or Inventory. The simulation involves each person making dozens of decisions on how best to manage their area. Examples include negotiating with customers, selecting suppliers, buying new equipment, and setting inventory planning parameters.

The best teams will collaborate on a business strategy, ensure all functional disciplines are aligned, and achieve the best performance in terms of ROI for their company. Some teams may not achieve great alignment, will struggle making decisions, and drive their bus over the cliff!

How Does It Work?

You will need to register a team of 4 by February 2, 2017.

The cost is $995.00 per team.

The competition begins on February 9, 2017. There will be a webinar explaining the details and providing a tour of The Fresh Connection dashboard.

The competition will involve 5 rounds, with each round opening up more decisions for each person to make. Each team will have telephone, email, and online support from a certified facilitator for The Fresh Connection.

  • Kick-off webinar on February 9 at 10:00 AM CST or repeated at 6:00 PM CST

  • Round 1 ends on February 16 at10:00 PM CST

  • Round 2 ends on February 23 at 10:00 PM CST

  • Round 3 ends on March 2 at 10:00 PM CST

  • Round 4 ends on March 9 at 10:00 PM CST

  • Round 5 ends on March 16 at 10:00 PM CST

  • Online awards ceremony on March 23 at 10:00 AM CST

    How Do We Win?

    Teams will be ranked based upon the return on investment they generate for the company modeled in the simulation.

    Bragging rights as being "the best of the best" and a grand prize will be awarded to the team that obtains the highest return on investment.

    Prizes will also be awarded to other top performers. We are still collecting options from our sponsors, but some exciting prizes include:

  • Four seats in a Supply Chain Management course that is integrated with The Fresh Connection valued at $6,360. (Includes all materials.)

  • Four seats in a Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD) course valued up to $6,000. (Does not include materials and exam fees.)

  • One seat in a Certified Lean Master (CLM) program valued at $3,750. (Includes all materials and exam fee.)

My name is Keith Johnson CPIM, CSCP and I have the honor of serving as your Great Lakes District Manager. It is my responsibility to provide training and support to all of the professional and student chapters in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. SIU Update

The APICS SIU student chapter has been a successful story after it was established in January, 2015. Since inception, we had one professional development meeting (PDM) with participation of an SIU alumni, Mr. Shawn Batka, one Microsoft Excel Workshop, and also conducted a general meeting. The organization is spreading its roots and has generated some interest within the College of Business, based on our initial success.

Certified Quality Technician (CQT) Exam Review Course

The course is intended to prepare candidates to take the ASQ CQT Exam. The following body of knowledge is included: quality concepts, quality tools, statistical techniques, metrology, calibration, inspection, testing, quality audits, preventative and corrective action.  CQT Exam Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have at least 4 years of higher education and/or work experience in one or more of the CQT body of knowledge areas.  Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) Exam Review Course

The course is intended to prepare candidates to take the ASQ CMQ/OE Exam. The following body of knowledge is included: leadership, strategy development, management skills, quality systems, quality models, management tools, statistical analysis, customer focus, supplier management, training, development, and essay questions.

CMQ/OE Exam Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have at least 10 years of higher education and/or work experience in one or more of the CMQ/OE body of knowledge areas, including 5 years of a decision-making position.

Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) Exam Review Course

The course is intended to prepare candidates to take the ASQ CSSBB Exam. The following body of knowledge is included: enterprise-wide deployment, process management, team management, DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, and control), statistical process control, design of experiments, failure mode and effects analysis, statistics, and hypothesis testing.

CSSBB Exam Eligibility Requirements: The application for Six Sigma Black Belt requires two completed Six Sigma projects documented by signed affidavits; or one project with a signed affidavit and three years of work experience as it pertains to the Body of Knowledge.

Sales & Operations Planning


Certified Sales & Operations Planning (CS&OP)

The Certified Sales & Operations Planning (CS&OP) Exam will be available.  The examinations will be administered by ExamSoft at 230+ testing sites in the U.S.


Some certifications require the test taker to have reached a given level of formal education and/or to have a certain amount of on-the-job experience before becoming certified. We do not do that for one very important reason, based on the nature of Sales & Operations Planning:

S&OP is a highly people-intensive and cross-functional process, requiring virtually all involved people to change significant parts of how they do their jobs. Some of these people, the most important ones, are the Executive Team, up to and including the leader of the business. They must be involved, hands-on, to achieve success with S&OP.

Therefore, the key attributes of a person to lead the implementation are (1) people skills up, down and sideways; (2) the ability to communicate effectively with top management and to earn – or keep – their trust; knowledge of the company’s customers, products, and processes. Effective testing for the first two attributes is, to the best of our knowledge, beyond the state of the art of today’s certification exams.

So what does S&OP Certification mean? It means that the holder of the CS&OP certification has substantial knowledge of Sales & Operations Planning and its components and enhancements: Demand Planning, Supply Planning, Decision-Making Processes, Global S&OP, S&OP in heavily matrix organizations, and so forth.
